What is a Spiritual Teacher
Certainly you can find good classes, workshops and even energy work in our new metaphysical world. So why work with a Spiritual Teacher?
A Spiritual Teacher holds a blueprint for your growth process.
Growth is not about releasing everything as fast as you can, or about working on what you choose when you choose. Growth needs to have progression and order so that one piece can build on the next. Pacing and timing are crucial. Your teacher will have the whole picture so all you have to do is be patient and cooperate.
You wrote the blueprint that your Spiritual Teacher will use. Before you were born, you decided what Heart qualities you needed to develop and what situations you would need to create that would benefit the evolution of your soul in the best possible way.
Your blueprint holds life lessons as well as support lessons, but you get to choose how much evolution you will experience in one lifetime. You may do this by laying out a certain number of crossroads (big choice situations) that will be encountered, or by laying out hundreds of small ones. You also get to write into your script the people and things that will support you in becoming aware of your lessons.
Your Spiritual Teacher will not only help you hold your intent to grow, but will also help you to stay focused on choices for moving forward rather than backwards.
Keeping you on track may require some nudging by your teacher. She/he may need to give you a nudge to get you to refocus on what your Heart has outlined for you. It is easy to let emotions, physical needs, or even mental rationalizations be in charge of your life, but spiritual growth must be outlined by the Heart. No matter how strong a person is spiritually, it is difficult to let go of the more tenacious attachments to people and things. A Spiritual Teacher will remind you to stay true to your Heart.
A Spiritual Teacher never loses sight of your God-self even when you are bogged down in your issues. The teacher must not only see the full radiance of your God-self at all times, but they must also stay connected to it. This ensures that all guidance will be for your highest and best good. As they are holding you in perfection, they are also keeping in view your non-Heart patterns because this is where your lessons lie.
A Spiritual Teacher certainly can't make you grow, but definitely can be an asset on your path. If you choose this method of growth, your student/teacher relationship has the potential of being the most intimate and sacred relationship you will ever have. As with all relationships, you must bring your part. Such Heart qualities as Commitment, Loyalty, Honesty, Dedication, Courage, Persistence and Discernment are not optional. To throw in a few more like Love, Honor and Support would be preferable.
A Spiritual Teacher can only be as big for you as the space you create by the Heart qualities that you bring.
The Heart qualities you have within you to bring to the student/teacher relationship are the ones you brought into this life with you. These are the ones you will need in order to learn the lessons you have chosen. So do not fear that you might not have what it takes to follow your blueprint. You do! However, bringing those qualities to a spiritual teacher to help you empower them can make the qualities bigger than if they stand alone. This is the very point that scares some people. They feel if they can't do it alone, they are weak and incompetent, and from that weak place they fear becoming dependent.
It is true, there are real Spiritual Teachers who will support you in becoming more powerful, and then there are the pseudo-Spiritual Teachers who want to control your power. So how can you know the difference? Look at their past record with students. Do their students express who they are in the world? What do you experience in the presence of this person? Is she or he honest and real? Be sure to look beyond their charisma to the Heart. Last, but certainly not least, meditate and pray. Ask that you be guided to the right teacher and it will be so.
If you choose a Spiritual Teacher, honor that relationship with all that you are. It is a very serious commitment on both sides. If you have already chosen your Spiritual Teacher, then I hope reading this will help you to make a deeper commitment to bring all of your Heart qualities to that relationship space.
