What is a Spiritual Teacher?
Certainly you can find good classes, good workshops, good self-help websites and even good energy-workers in our metaphysical world of self-improvement. So why work with a Spiritual Teacher?
A Spiritual teacher helps you to stay focused on your blueprint for spiritual growth and spiritual healing. Growth and healing are not about releasing everything as fast as you can. Nor are they about working on what you choose when you choose. They need to have progression and order so that one piece can build on the next. Pacing and timing are crucial. With wisdom, love and guidance, your teacher will support you in that progression and order.
It is your personal blueprint that your Spiritual Teacher uses. Before you were born, it was decided what spiritual qualities (or heart energies) you needed to develop and what situations you would need to do so. A blueprint was put in place to benefit the evolution of your soul in the best possible way. Without a Spiritual Teacher acting as your “general contractor,” so to speak, it is easy to get stuck in one little room or add rooms that don’t work in the total plan. It is your life you are building, but that doesn’t mean you must build it alone.
Your blueprint holds your big life lessons as well as your smaller support lessons. How much growth and evolution you experience in one lifetime will be determined by how closely you follow this plan. There may be a certain number of crossroads (big choice situations) that you will encounter, as well as hundreds of small choices. There will be some people along the way who will support you through the decisions that interface with your intent to grow. But a Spiritual Teacher will always be there holding that intent in front of you. She/he will make sure you don’t skip over a choice to for growth to move forward.
Keeping you on track may require some nudging by your teacher. She/he may need to give you the proverbial slap on the hand to get you to refocus on what has been outlined for you. It is easy to let emotions, physical needs, or mental rationalizations become the reason a choice is made, but it is your Heart (spiritual essence) that must choose to fulfill your spiritual blueprint. No matter how strong a person is spiritually, it is difficult to let go of the more tenacious attachments to people and things. A Spiritual Teacher will remind you to stay true to your Heart.
The opposite of the resistant or attached student is the overly ambitious one. These people know what they are here for and are “go-getters.” Their tendency is to grab for new truths and wisdom before the last one was fully incorporated into the permanent records of their psyche. This means lessons have to be redone. It is the job of your Spiritual Teacher to help you know when it is time to pull back and when it is time to move forward.
A Spiritual Teacher never loses sight of your God-self even when you are totally bogged down in your issues. The teacher must see the full radiance of your God-self at all times, and also resonate with it. This ensures that all guidance will be for your highest and best good. While at the same time your teacher is holding you in perfection, he/she is keeping in view your lessons encased in non-heart patterns.
A Spiritual Teacher certainly can’t make you grow, but he/she definitely can be an asset on your path. If you choose this way of spiritual growth and personal change, your student/teacher relationship can become a very intimate and sacred one. As with all relationships, you must bring your part. Such spiritual qualities as commitment, loyalty, honesty, dedication, courage, persistence and trust are not optional. To throw in a few more like love, honor and discernment would be preferable. A Spiritual Teacher can only be as big for you as the space you create from the spiritual qualities that you bring.
The spiritual qualities you have within you to bring to the student/teacher relationship are the ones you brought into this life with you. These are the very ones you will need to learn the lessons laid out in your life’s script. Thus, you need never fear that you might not have what you need to follow that script. While you have everything you need in your Heart, letting your spiritual qualities resonate with a powerful teacher will help to empower them and make them bigger than if you stand alone. This is the very point that scares some people. They feel if they can’t do it alone, they are weak and incompetent, and from that weak place they fear becoming dependent.
It is true, there are the pseudo Spiritual Teachers who want to control your power, but the real Spiritual Teachers only wish to support you in becoming powerful. So how can you know the difference? Look at their past record with other students. Do their students express who they are in the world? What do you experience in the presence of this person? Is she or he honest and real - be sure to look beyond their charisma to their Heart. Last, but certainly not least, meditate and pray. Ask that you be guided to the right teacher and it will be so.
